Suffolk County Health Department Grants St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center $21,000

Smithtown, New York - Suffolk County Health Department granted St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center $21,000 to enhance the Cardiac Catheterization Lab.

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab at St. Catherine’s has provided the community with access to Primary Coronary Intervention (PCI) for the past three years. PCI is the emergent revascularization of a patient experiencing an acute myocardial infarction, or heart attack, via balloon angioplasty and stent deployment.

The grant has greatly enhanced the Emergency Department and the Cardiac Catheterization Lab with a monitor that offers superior continuous cardiac monitoring for patients requiring angioplasty. The new equipment allows prompt intervention in the hospital, preserves cardiac functions, returning patients to productive lives and will significantly lower hospital length of stay statistics and medical costs.

Patients admitted through the Emergency Department, usually with the complaint of chest pain, are promptly triaged as possible PCI candidates. They are then connected to the monitor, which is capable of recording cardiac rhythm disturbances that frequently accompany heart attacks. The monitor is maintained during the emergency department assessment, through transport to the catheterization lab and angioplasty procedure, and transport to the Cardiac Care Unit, while maintaining seamless, safe care. The new monitor has greatly enhanced the lab’s ability to provide superior-level care to the local community.

St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center is a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island and is devoted to providing advanced healthcare, in an environment of compassion, to its patients and their families. The Medical Center sits on a 110-acre campus and includes a 318-bed acute care hospital, a 240-bed nursing home, a 298 unit senior housing facility, and a medical office building.
